A STRABANE fighter has become the first person in the county to sign a professional bare knuckle boxing deal.
Dominic McConnell, already an exponent of kick-boxing, jiu jitsu and MMA, will add another pugilistic art to his CV when he appears at the O2 in London on June 8.
Taking to the ring for fight number seven on the night, ‘Domz the Bombs’ will take on Mitch Turner in his first professional fight through BKB (Bare Knuckle Boxing).
Billed as ‘The only licensed bare-knuckle boxing company on the planet,’ BKB prides itself on integrity, respect and celebrating success.
“It’s heavy-duty, hard core stuff but I’m ready,” Domz remarked this week. “I’m confident enough, training hard and eating perfect. I’m looking forward to it.”
Essentially a boxing match with mere padding for the hands rather than gloves, this “intensely exciting purist combat” (according to the BKB website) is gaining in popularity in Britain. BKB has already staged 16 shows in such stadia as the O2 and the Liverpool Echo Arena.
Nor is the Strabane man overawed at the prospect of taking to the ring without any cushioned gloves to lessen the blows from his opponent.
“I am nervous,” Domz admitted. “But I’m nervous before any fight and anyone who tells you any different is a liar.
“This is all new to me, but I’m excited.
“I’m gonna knock him out cold in the first round. I’ve watched him fight on YouTube and he’s only a brawler with no technique. I’ll be looking to use my skill.”
He added, “The plan of action is: I’m gonna go for his body first and when I land a few shots and he drops his hands, I’ll knock his block off.
“The support I’ve had in Strabane so far has been amazing. I can’t wait.”
Domz would like to extend a word of thanks to all his sponsors.
