STRABANE will be buzzing with colourful banners, excited applause and shouts of support this morning when hundreds of runners pound the roads to complete this year’s Strabane Lifford Half Marathon.
Last year over 1,000 runners took to the local roads in an attempt to complete the 13.1 miles course and a similar number are expected to decend upon the area again.
Derry City and Strabane District Council, in conjunction with Lifford Strabane AC, are again the hosts of the successful annual cross-border challenge, which has cemented its position as one of the biggest and most popular races on the local athletics calendar.
Local knowledge proved significant last year as Finn Valley AC’s Gerard Gallagher and Claire McGuigan from Lifford Strabane AC were the first senior men and women past the post, while popular Carndonagh athlete Karol Doherty won the wheelchair section as the race finished on the running track at the Melvin Sports Complex.
The event starts at Meetinghouse Street in Strabane at 9.30am with finishers arriving at the running track at the Melvin Sports Complex from 10.35am until around 1pm.
