Voting very slow in European election

EARLY indications from polling stations across Strabane indicate a low turn-out for today’s European election. 

The lunchtime figures had an average of just 10 per-cent of people having cast their vote by 12pm.

At St Catherine’s PS on Barrack Street, some 214 locals out of an electorate of 1,857 (11 per-cent) had turned out to vote by noon.


At the polling station at Riversdale Leisure Centre some 231 people from 2,425 eligible voters (9.5 per-cent) had made their mark, while over in St Mary’s PS 112 out of 931 (12 per-cent) of people had turned out.

Meanwhile Strabane PS on the Derry Road has the lowest turn-out so far with just 154 folk out of a total electorate of 1,809 (8.5 per-cent) having cast their vote.

Polls stay open this evening until 10pm.
