LOCAL teen, Rhianna Elliott is back home following her vital spinal operation in Turkey.
The 13-year-old returned to her Clady home last week after what was described as a “successful” surgery.
The youngster, who recently developed Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis, travelled to the Turkish hospital the week before last to undergo an operation to have a curvature of her spine corrected.
Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis is a disorder whereby the spine matures abnormally, and curves excessively in one direction.
In Rhianna’s case, this curving could have damaged organs by putting excessive pressure on them. Her rib cage was also pressing on her lungs which caused shortness of breath and if her spine had continued to grow unchecked, Rhianna’s other organs may be affected.
“Rhianna’s operation was very successful,” mum Fiona explained. “Hopefully now she will have full recovery soon.
“She was able to walk a bit already and she has been so brave and positive.”
Fiona further explained that Rhianna will have to return to Turkey in the near future for more check-ups.
“Thanks to everyone for the lovely messages and support,” she added.
As this corrective spinal operation is not available on the NHS, the family had to travel to Turkey to have it performed, which will cost up to £45,000. A fund-raising campaign to assist with the cost was also launched locally.
