SION Swifts have bolstered their bid for a first ever Danske Bank Women’s Premiership title by signing three overseas players.
They include top American colleges player Kristin Desmond, Haiti international Samantha Brand and Jamaican international Donna Kay Henry.
Desmond and Brand were both expected to make their competitive debuts against Derry City Ladies in this evening’s (Wednesday) Foyle Cup clash with Henry scheduled to arrive next Wednesday.
The signings are a real statement of intent by a Sion outfit which trails both Glentoran Women and Linfield Ladies by two points in their quest for a first Premiership crown.
And the timing couldn’t be better either given that manager Tony McGinley has lost the services of two of his leading attackers.
Lauren Brennan has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to the recurrence of an old cruciate injury while Chloe McGlade played her last game for Sion in the 10-0 thumping of Comber Rec before going on a scholarship to the States.
Fortunately Sion don’t have another league game until they take on Cliftonville on August 7 and McGinley said that would allow his new attacking recruits time to bed in and get used to their new surroundings.
