A MARVELLOUS field of giant sunflowers which cast a sea of gold onto the Ardstraw skyline are helping to raise money for very sick children.
This summer, Ardstraw ladies, Gemma and Zoe Russell are inviting local people to enjoy the bright spectacle, located at Deerpark Road in aid of The Children’s Cancer Unit Charity at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.
The charity – who are dedicated to helping fund the children’s haematology and cancer unit in the hospital – are currently supporting Gemma and Zoe’s 16-year-old cousin, Joel Brown in his fight against cancer.
In turn, the girls are hoping that they can raise as much money as possible to help the hospital and charity save the lives of unwell babies and children across the country.
“The sunflowers bring such beauty to the area,” said a member of the Russell family.
“Because Joel isn’t well at the moment, and he is undergoing cancer treatments at such a young age, doing something like this is so worthwhile.
“That’s why today we are inviting you to sample a little piece of Provence, France, in aid of this worthy cause.
“You are also most welcome to pick the flowers, and grab a photo opportunity with your friends at this location, just off the A5.”
A voluntary contribution to The Children’s Cancer Unit Charity may be placed in the honesty box located at the gate of the sunflower field.
• The majestic sunflower field is located at 24 Deerpark Road, BT78 4LA. Directions: Travel along the A5 on the Newtownstewart-to-Strabane Road. Turn off when you see the sign for Ardstraw, and continue about a mile down the road.
