POLICE are currently in attendance at a security alert in the Innisfree Gardens area of Strabane following the report of a suspicious object in the garden of a house.

A number of homes have been evacuated and cordons are in place.

Chief Inspector Jonathan Hunter said, “We’re working to ensure the safety of members of the public, and we thank everyone for their patience at this time.”

Speaking from the scene of the alert Sinn Féín Cllr Michaela Boyle added, “There is an ongoing security alert at lower end of Innisfree Gardens.  People have been evacuated from their homes and the community centre is open for those needing shelter.”

SDLP West Tyrone MLA Daniel McCrossan said the alert  has forced local people from their homes, many of them elderly.

He explained, “Following the discovery of a suspicious object, the PSNI has begun an evacuation of properties in the Inisfree Gardens area of Strabane.

“Many of the residents here are elderly or disabled. This incident is causing significant distress.

“I will be in close contact with police throughout the day to ensure that residents can return to their homes as soon as possible when the area is made safe.”
