SION Mills man, Mark Beattie had a bank holiday weekend to remember in London where he helped Ireland claim the Short Mat Bowls World Cup before going on to claim the Short Mat Players Tour UK Open crown.
The Short Mat Bowls World Cup took place in London on Friday of last week and alongside his national team colleagues, PJ Gallagher, Joe Beattie and Nathan Haire, Mark helped Ireland reach the final against Sweden.
In the decider, Ireland came out on top after four hard-fought matches to take the title by 4.5 points to 1.5 points with a last bowl victory (38 shots to Swedens 37 shots).
Last Saturday and Sunday, Mark returned to action as an individual to take on 195 other players from across the globe in a bid to win the UK Open.
After two long days of bowling, as fate would have it, the final would be contested by an Irish player and a Swedish player, just as had occurred in the World Cup final.
This time it was Beattie against Jonas Hager and the contest was very close up to the midway point but Mark took the lead in the latter stages and held on for victory to be crowned the 2019 UK Open champion.
