Sign up today to become an organ donor

The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council has pledged her support for Organ Donation Week by urging families across Strabane to have that difficult conversation with their family and friends about organ donation.

Mayor Michaela Boyle, a strong advocate for organ donation, said she very much supported the call by the Western Health and Social Care Trust to encourage people to sign up to be an organ donor and to communicate their wishes to those closest to them.

It is Organ Donation Week (2 – 8 September 2019) and the council is supporting the Western Health and Social Care Trust campaign to promote organ donation.

Almost 48% of the adult population in the local Western Trust Council areas are registered potential donors. However, there is a real shortage of organ donations with approximately 140 people in the North and approximately 6,000 people in the UK waiting on life-saving transplants. Unfortunately every year around 14 people in Northern Ireland die waiting for an organ transplant.

Pledging her support for the campaign Mayor Michaela Boyle said that she fully accepted that becoming an organ donor can be a difficult decision for some people but it was important to consider the impact of that decision and the other people that stand to benefit.

For example in 2018/19 there were eight organ donors in the Western Trust area which resulted in 20 patients receiving a life-saving or life changing transplant.

Mayor Boyle said, “I would strongly encourage people to consider donating their organs and tissues after death and help give the gift of life to others. I would like to acknowledge the tremendous work being done by the Trust to promote organ donation and the progress they have made in increasing the number of donors, however there is still work to be done. We need the support of the people of Derry and Strabane and I as Mayor of the city would encourage as many of you as possible to join the Organ Donor Register today and to tell your loved ones your wishes.”
