AN appearance on RTÉ’s Winning Streak by Strabane’s Anastasia Doherty saw her bring home a cool €32,000 in cash – and a holiday to Olso in Norway, for her mum Bridget McNulty.
Two weeks ago Bridget was gobsmacked when she heard her name called out by Winning Streak presenters Marty Whelan and Sinead Kennedy to appear on the programme. She has been sending in scratch cards for years but never had any luck. Her daughter Anastasia, who lives close by, missed the show but was getting a lot of calls and messages asking if it was her mother who would be appearing on TV next week.
The following day Anastasia visited her mum to congratulate her and the pair watched the Sunday rerun of the show – just to be sure it wasn’t a dream. It was then that Bridget asked her daughter to go on the show in her place. Anastasia was delighted to do the deed for her mother.
Anastasia’s mum Bridget will split her winnings 50:50 with her sister (and Anastasia’s godmother) Suzie. In every lottery ticket, scratch card or draw either sister enters, they split any winnings down the middle – something Bridget and Suzie have done for many years.
Both sisters were in the Winning Streak audience on Saturday cheering on Anastasia.
Dental nurse manager, Anastasia has six other siblings – four of whom were also in the audience: Eugene, Ultan, Jarlaith and Josephine. The other two, Eamon and Ciaran, watched from home.
Anastasia has been married to Lawrence for 20 years and he, along with his brothers, run a local furniture business in Strabane called Doherty’s Designer Suites. She also has two children who were supporting her from the audience: Lorcan (18) and Lasairiona (17).
