LIFFORD ABC will take the next step on its development path tonight by hosting its first ever tournament.
The event will take place from 8pm in Lifford Community Centre and promises to provide those in attendance with a host of exciting bouts.
The headline act on the night looks set to produce fireworks as former team-mates, Lifford BC’s Oisin McHugh takes on his one-time Raphoe colleague, Liam McMonagle in a welterweight showdown.
But it’s not just the top of the bill that is set to catch the eye. The club’s first ever female fighter, Shanice McGarrigle will also take to the ring when the Strabane lass clashes with Raphoe’s Georgia Mae Doherty in a Girl 1 33kg encounter.
And another bout that is sure to produce a dynamic fight is the 75kg coming together of Lifford BC’s Barry McGinty and Daniel Doogan, who is another Raphoe man.
“This is a big step for the club and it will hopefully be the first of many tournaments,” explained club founder, Dennis Lafferty, who is delighted with how things have gone during its first year.
He added: “We’ve been doing a good bit of travelling to other tournaments, we were down in Ballyliffin two weeks ago and we were in Burnfoot last week, so we’re away every week.
“It’s been good. There are clubs coming to our own gym to spar too, so things are going the right way.
“But Saturday night should be good, there are five Raphoe fights on, so there will be plenty of local interest!”
The first bout is scheduled for 8pm tonight.
