O’Neill’s begins production of medical scrubs

O’Neills factory in Strabane has started production of scrubs for use by medical staff here.

A spokesperson for the company explained, “With immediate effect, O’Neills will be manufacturing scrubs for the Health and Social Care Trusts. The health and safety of our workers is paramount and we are observing government hygiene and distancing guidelines. We are delighted to play our part in supporting the work of frontline healthcare staff at this time.”

On Thursday the factory annonced its closure with staff expected to be out of work until May amid coronavirus fears.

The Strabane-based sportswears giant is one of the biggest employers in the local area, with a staff of around 800  people.

A concerned worker at the factory said staff were told this afternoon that the factory would be closed for around six weeks.
