Strabane rugby players’ delight at return to training

SAYING Strabane Rugby Club’s players were delighted to return to training last week would appear to be an oxymoron, but after missing the guts of a year because of the Covid-19 pandemic, they really were.

For the next six weeks or so, players will meet once per week at the Meadows for some touch rugby games as they attempt to reintroduce themselves the sport following a lengthy lay-off.

After the get back on familiar terms with the game, they intend to introduce a more serious format to training under head coach, Stephen Barr, before focusing on the 2021/22 season, which should get underway in September.

“It’s about fun and games at the moment,” explained club captain, Simon McSparron.

“It’s good to get back into it and for the next six weeks for one night a week we will refamiliarise ourselves with the game again and then we’ll go to something a bit more structured.”

In the meantime, anyone interested in joining the club’s training sessions is welcome to do so on a Thursday at 7.30pm to 8.30pm at the Meadows.
